9/3 Students should bring a copy of the summer reading, their Study Guide started (will be due end of next week but good for reviewing the novel for test tomorrow), lyrics of a song that would be ideal for a soundtrack of the summer reading book (related to character or theme), a favorite quote from the text.

9/18 Medical Conference--Final Assessment on Catcher (200 pts) From the time you enter class you must stay in character to avoid points taken off. You must have assignment typed/printed with you. Everyone must have an equal say so carefully choose your input because dominating the conference will cause points to be deducted as much as not speaking. I will call on you with specific questions. You must be recognized by me as Chief of Staff to speak (much like in Model UN you must be given the floor). Arguing in an unprofessional way, being off task/out of character will cause lost points.
IMPORTANT: Starting the week of 9/28, each student must build a vocabulary list. Keep the words with definitions in your notebook and be ready to show them at any time for a homework grade. These should come primarily from words you encounter in books we read for English class or literary terms but any words that will useful to you on the SAT are fine. (ex) Bildungsroman--German word meaning "novel of formation/education/coming-of-age/initiation or rite of passage story (examples) The Giver, To Kill a Mockingbird, Lord of the Flies, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Alchemist, Catcher in the Rye
9/21 Begin your vocab list (see above). In class we went over the Writing Diagnostic with DIDLS (see important links). For homework, finish marking the passage using DIDLS. Begin working on Language Usage/Revision handouts given. Read the link on Weebly before filling out sheets. These will be due next Monday.
9/22 Paragraph on how Catcher in the Rye "SEARED" you due. Diagnostic passage due. Writing Revision worksheets due after the break on Monday.
MAP Testing High School (Grades 9-10): Week of October 12th - 16th
9/28 Improving your writing/grammar/usage for standardized tests and university
Read/study the following link on Ning: Writing Revision and Usage. To check for understanding, bring to class completed worksheets given on 9/21. We will work all week on writing skills and apply them in analyzing 2 short stories: "The New Dress" by Virginia Woolf and "Araby" by James Joyce. Download both as PDFs and make study guides for each WITHOUT consulting any outside sources. We will apply DIDLs to both. After this week you will be held accountable in writing assignments for comma splices, fragments, run-ons (5 each); errors in subject-verb agreement, pronoun -antecedent agreement, apostrophes, use of the semi-colon, verb tense shifts, capitalization (2 each). Learn these basic rules now and apply them throughout the year/your high school career. If you don't understand rules we cover, come in for additional help.
