To check for understanding, complete worksheets in class. We will work all week on writing skills and apply them in analyzing prose. After this week you will be held accountable in writing assignments for comma splices, fragments, run-ons (10 each); errors in subject-verb agreement, pronoun -antecedent agreement, apostrophes, use of the semi-colon, verb tense shifts, capitalization (2 each). Learn these basic rules now and apply them throughout the year/your high school career. If you don't understand rules we cover, come in for additional help.

Dead Poets Society Speech
The four pillars of Welton are Tradition, Honor, Discipline, and Excellence. Mr. Keating is accused of blatant abuse of power as teacher and is fired for directly causing Neil’s death and corrupting the boys’ character. Extending your previous analysis of Dead Poets Society, write and deliver a speech for the headmaster of Welton in defense or condemnation of Mr. Keating as a teacher. Consider your knowledge of romanticism vs traditionalism/classicism. Consider intent and actions and any other proof from the movie for your stand.

A hard copy must be printed and brought to class-- at least 2 pages long double spaced. Word limit is 650 words; no worries if you go over. You can cut down with my help for the 2nd draft due (50 pts completion grade later) Final essay (3rd draft) will be a 200 pt test grade. Work on 1st draft daily in class while I am gone and finish at home if needed. Should the sub tell me you were not working in class, points will be deducted or the essay will not be accepted.
